Welcome to the
Teresa McCoy House
OUR STORY
The Teresa McCoy House was born from the deeply personal experiences shared by my own mother. Since the age of seven, I witnessed my mom endure relationships with men who repeatedly abused her. Her unwavering strength and resilience continue to inspire me every day. My mother, Teresa, was a strong-willed, gracious, and God-fearing woman. She had the courage to leave abusive relationships time and time again, only to find herself pulled back into the cycle of violence. Despite her trials, she survived unimaginable hardships. She was declared clinically dead four times—three of those instances caused by some sort of abuse—and yet, she miraculously returned to life. Those experiences left lasting scars, including the loss of her spleen, but her determination to keep fighting was incredible. Not everyone has the strength my mother possessed, and that’s why I founded this non-profit organization. The Teresa McCoy House exists to provide support for men and women looking to escape domestic violence. Our mission is not only to help them leave abusive situations but also to guide them toward rebuilding their lives and thriving beyond the pain.

At The Teresa McCoy House, our mission is to provide a safe, compassionate, and empowering refuge for survivors of domestic abuse — a place where healing begins and hope is restored. Inspired by personal experience and fueled by a commitment to breaking the cycle of abuse, we offer shelter, support, and resources to help individuals and families rebuild their lives with dignity and strength. We believe that everyone deserves to feel safe, valued, and seen, and we are dedicated to creating a community where lasting change and true healing are possible. We envision a future where every survivor of domestic abuse in Southeast Iowa finds safety, strength, and a clear path forward. The Teresa McCoy House strives to become a beacon of hope — a place where lives are rebuilt, cycles of violence are broken, and healing empowers survivors to reclaim their voices and futures.
